Travel Spotlight on Hopper Blog: the Golden Isles and its Best Attractions.
St. Simons is the largest of Georgia’s aptly named network of Golden Isles.
St. Simons offers a variety of attractions for the whole family, romantic and Southern-infused restaurants serving ever-fresh seafood from the Atlantic Ocean, plenty of historic parks and buildings, designer golf courses, and endless coastline.
Once visitors park their cars in the hotel, they can leave ‘em there – the best way to get around is by walking or following the expansive bike paths alongside most of the streets on the island. Aside from all the regular coastal activities like beachcombing, boating, fishing and kayaking, St. Simons is also known for its seven luxury golf courses and large oak-lined parks to enjoy, including the Fort Frederica National Monument, which was once an 18th century fort which protected the Georgia border from Spanish invaders.
The Great Dunes Park is one of the undisputed gems of Georgia’s Golden Isles.
For those heading to Jekyll Island for the beaches, there’s no better spot to kick back than here. The Great Dunes Park offers visitors a number of amenities and activities right on the seaside, from covered deck areas to well-maintained picnic spots. Nearby there are plenty of bike and Segway rental shops, making the park a prime location from which to explore the rest of Jekyll Island’s eastern coast.
Close to ST. Simons Island is the conservation and rehabilitation at The Georgia Sea Turtle Center.
Turtle-orientated ecotourism has been high on the agenda for many destinations on the Georgia’s eastern seaboard. This conservation and rehabilitation center on Jekyll Island has become one of the most visited in the state. It offers visitors daily tours during the summer. The Center gives a rare and unique insight into the life of this endangered species.
It is easily accessible by car. St. Simons Island is about a 1.5-hour drive south of Savannah. It lies little over 72 miles north Jacksonville.
Those who prefer to fly can fly into Brunswick Golden Isles Airport or to Savannah/Hilton Head International.
