The annual hide-and-seek adventure…

In the early 1900s, fishermen on the east coast used hollow glass balls, called floats, to mark their fishing nets. Sometimes, these floats would break free and float to the shore, where lucky beachcombers would find and keep them. Collecting these rare glass floats became a popular hobby in the 1950s.
Today, Jekyll Island invites artists from all over the country to create special, one-of-a-kind glass floats for its annual Island Treasures event. The glass floats are part of a fun hide-and-seek game that takes place on Jekyll Island during January and February. Every day, volunteers known as Beach Buddies hide clear plastic globes around the Island for guests to find. If you find a globe, you can exchange it for a real, handcrafted glass float. Gather your friends and family to search for these globes and get your own beautiful glass float.
IMPORTANT
When exploring Jekyll Island, remember that you won’t find Island Treasures in beach dunes, marsh areas, private homes, or golf courses. Entering these places could be against the law and may be unsafe.
We encourage everyone to explore Jekyll Island in January or February and go on this family-fun scavenger hunt. You may be lucky enough to take a Golden Isles glass globe home with you.
