The 85th annual Brunswick Blessing of the Fleet is a cherished tradition that celebrates the fishing industry in this coastal Georgia town.
Each year, local shrimpers gather to have their boats blessed, and it’s a time for them to fellowship with one another, reflect on the hard work they put in all year long and give thanks for another successful season.
Over sixty years ago, the Portuguese immigrants of Brunswick introduced a cherished tradition to their new home: the blessing. Today, this event remains closely tied to the Catholic church of St. Francis Xavier. It honors both Our Lady of Fatima and the mothers of the parish on Mother’s Day.
Following the procession, the fête advances towards the waterfront. Freshly adorned shrimp trawlers show their spirit for the highly-esteemed decoration contest. This glorious event presents active boats and pleasure crafts participating in the sacred blessing in recent times. Enthusiastic relatives and companions of the boat owners gather on the decks.
This all-day event takes place at Mary Ross Park on Saturday, May 13th 2023 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM with the actual blessing being held at 2:00 PM.
This one-day celebration is held on the Saturday before Mother’s Day in May. One of the best events that Coastal Georgia has to offer, we proudly offer a taste of fresh seafood, local culture, boating, water sports, the shrimping industry, arts, crafts and variety of leisure activities. The festival will feature fun and games for the kids, fabulous food, music, great family entertainment, and a variety of artists and displays.
